Pathology & Laboratory

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory is the diagnostic backbone of St. Stephen’s Hospital. Behind every confident clinical decision is a reliable test result — and that is the standard we hold ourselves to.

Our laboratory provides the full range of services: routine biochemistry and haematology, microbiology, serology, histopathology, cytopathology, and specialised testing. Reports are dependable, turnaround times are short, and quality is monitored continuously.

Conditions we treat

  • Routine health screening — blood sugar, cholesterol, kidney and liver function, thyroid, vitamins
  • Infections — bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic
  • Anaemia and other blood disorders
  • Cancers — diagnosis through biopsy and cytology
  • Hormonal and endocrine disorders
  • Autoimmune disease screening
  • Pregnancy-related testing
  • Infectious disease serology — Hepatitis, HIV, dengue, typhoid, and more
  • Coagulation and bleeding disorders

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast before a blood test?

Some tests require fasting (typically 8 to 12 hours), most notably fasting glucose and lipid profile. Many tests do not. Your doctor’s prescription will usually mention this — and our staff will confirm at the time of booking.

How long do reports take?

Most routine blood tests are reported the same day. Some specialised tests (cultures, histopathology, specific hormonal assays) take longer — usually between 2 and 7 days. We will tell you the expected date when you submit the sample.

Can I get my reports online?

Yes. Reports are uploaded to the SSH patient portal and the mobile app, and can be downloaded any time. You can also collect a printed copy from the lab if you prefer.

Do you do home sample collection?

Yes, for selected areas and selected tests. Please call the lab to check availability and timing.
