Infectious Diseases

The Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Stephen’s Hospital diagnoses and treats infections — from the routine to the unusual. India remains a country where infection is a major cause of illness, and Delhi sees a particular mix of urban, tropical, and antibiotic-resistant infections.

Our team is built around accurate diagnosis, rational antibiotic use, and long-term follow-up for chronic infections like HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis. We work closely with our laboratory, microbiology, and other clinical departments — because the right answer in infectious disease usually depends on more than one specialist looking carefully at one patient.

Conditions we treat

  • Dengue, chikungunya, and other vector-borne infections
  • Typhoid and other gastrointestinal infections
  • Tuberculosis (TB) — including drug-resistant TB
  • HIV — diagnosis, antiretroviral therapy, and long-term care
  • Viral hepatitis (A, B, C, D, E)
  • Pneumonia and other complex respiratory infections
  • Urinary tract infections — recurrent or resistant
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Fever of unknown origin
  • Hospital-acquired and antibiotic-resistant infections
  • Tropical infections and travel-related illness
  • COVID-19 and other emerging infections

Frequently asked questions

Why was I told not to take antibiotics for my viral fever?

Antibiotics only work against bacteria. They do nothing for viral infections like flu, dengue, chikungunya, or most cold and cough illnesses. Taking them anyway is one of the main causes of antibiotic resistance — which is a serious and growing problem. The right thing is often the simpler thing: rest, fluids, and time.

Is HIV care confidential?

HIV care is strictly confidential. We do not share information without your consent, and you will be treated with the same dignity as any other patient. With modern treatment, people with HIV live long, healthy lives — and starting treatment early makes the biggest difference.

I keep getting urinary tract infections. Why?

Recurrent UTIs are common, especially in women, but they need proper investigation. Possible reasons range from an underlying problem in the urinary tract to inadequate previous treatment. We work through this systematically rather than just prescribing more antibiotics.

Do I need travel vaccinations for India domestic travel?

Usually not, though some regions have specific risks (such as Japanese encephalitis in certain areas). For international travel, recommendations depend on the destination, season, and your own health. A pre-travel consultation 4 to 6 weeks before departure is ideal.
