Paediatric Surgery

The Department of Paediatric Surgery at St. Stephen’s Hospital, part of the Division of Surgery, provides surgical care for children across every age group – newborns, infants, young children, adolescents, and young adults up to the age of 18. Children are not small adults: their surgical needs, their anatomy, and the way they experience hospital are all different, and they deserve a team that understands this.

We handle both common and complex children’s surgical conditions with a gentle, child-first approach and with as much attention to the worried parent as to the young patient. Where possible, we use techniques that minimise pain and speed recovery, and we work closely with our Paediatrics, Neonatology, and Anaesthesia teams.

Conditions we treat

  • Hernias and hydrocele in children
  • Undescended testis
  • Appendicitis in children
  • Congenital conditions present from birth
  • Surgical problems in newborns
  • Circumcision (medical indications)
  • Lumps, swellings, and cysts in children
  • Urological conditions in children
  • Abdominal conditions requiring surgery
