Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy

The Department of Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy supports patients recovering from surgery, injury, stroke, and long-term pain. Recovery is rarely linear — and the right rehabilitation plan can make the difference between getting back to full function and living with a permanent limitation.

Our team includes qualified physiotherapists working closely with surgeons, orthopaedicians, neurologists, and pain specialists across the hospital. Every patient gets an individual plan, regular review, and clear goals — not a generic exercise routine.

Conditions we treat

  • Recovery after orthopaedic surgery (knee, hip, spine, shoulder)
  • Rehabilitation after stroke and other neurological conditions
  • Back and neck pain
  • Sports injuries and soft tissue injuries
  • Frozen shoulder and other shoulder conditions
  • Knee pain, including post-injury and degenerative
  • Recovery after fractures
  • Post-operative pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • Geriatric rehabilitation — falls, balance, and mobility
  • Pre- and post-natal physiotherapy
  • Paediatric physiotherapy for selected conditions

Services and procedures

Assessment

  • Detailed physiotherapy assessment: history, examination, functional testing, and goal-setting.
  • Coordinated care: with your surgeon, orthopaedician, or physician — we work as part of your overall plan.
  • Pain assessment: to understand what is driving pain and what will realistically help.

Treatment

  • Manual therapy: joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques delivered by hand.
  • Therapeutic exercise: structured, progressive programmes targeted to your specific problem.
  • Electrotherapy: TENS, ultrasound, and other modalities used selectively where appropriate.
  • Gait and balance retraining: for patients recovering from stroke, injury, or surgery.
  • Posture correction: for back pain, neck pain, and ergonomic issues.
  • Pre-operative rehabilitation: preparing the body before scheduled surgery to improve recovery.
  • Home exercise programmes: what you do between sessions is what really moves recovery forward.

Specialised programmes

  • Stroke rehabilitation: including upper limb retraining, mobility, and functional independence.
  • Post-knee replacement rehab: structured programme to restore strength and range of motion.
  • Post-spine surgery rehab: delivered in close partnership with our Spine Surgery team.
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation: for COPD, post-pneumonia, and post-COVID patients.
  • Cardiac rehabilitation: supervised exercise programme after heart attack or cardiac surgery.

Frequently asked questions

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

It depends on the condition. Some problems resolve in 4 to 6 sessions. Others — post-stroke or post-major surgery — need much longer. We agree clear goals at the start and review them regularly. We do not believe in open-ended therapy that goes on forever without measurable progress.

Is physiotherapy painful?

Good physiotherapy may sometimes be uncomfortable, but it should not be sharply or worryingly painful. If something hurts in a wrong way, tell your therapist — we adjust the plan.

I have pain. Why is exercise the right treatment?

Pain that lasts beyond the early healing phase often becomes worse with rest and better with the right kind of movement. Structured exercise — done at the right intensity, with the right technique — is one of the most effective long-term treatments we have for chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Can I do physiotherapy without a doctor's referral?

Yes, in most cases. You can book directly. For complex problems, post-operative care, or anything where the cause of pain is unclear, a medical assessment first is sensible — and we will refer you if that is needed.
