  • Discectomy / Microdiscectomy: Removing the herniated portion of a spinal disc that is pressing on a nerve.
  • Laminectomy: Removing the lamina (the bony roof of the spinal canal) to create more space for the spinal nerves, commonly used to treat spinal stenosis.
  • Spinal Fusion: Permanently joining two or more vertebrae together using bone grafts, screws, and rods to stop painful motion and stabilize the spine.
  • Spine Tumor Surgery.

When and Why is it Needed?

Surgery is usually considered only after conservative treatments (like physical therapy, medications, and epidural injections) have failed. It is highly recommended if you experience:

  • Severe, radiating pain down your arms or legs (sciatica).
  • Numbness, tingling, or severe muscle weakness in your extremities.
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control (a medical emergency known as Cauda Equina Syndrome).

How Does the Procedure Work?

  • Preparation: You will be placed under general anesthesia.
  • The Surgery: Through an incision in your back (or sometimes the neck or abdomen), the surgeon removes the bone or disc material causing the nerve compression. If a fusion is needed, medical hardware is placed to lock the vertebrae together.
  • Timeframe: Procedures can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity.

Risks and Complications

  • Early Movement: You will be encouraged to walk the very same day or the day after surgery to prevent blood clots and stimulate healing.
  • Bracing: You may be required to wear a back or neck brace for a few weeks to support your spine while it heals.

Recovery takes time. You must avoid bending, lifting, and twisting (the “BLT” rule) for a few weeks. Committing to a physical therapy program is vital for strengthening your core muscles, which will act as an internal corset to protect your healing spine. Proper ergonomics and maintaining a healthy weight are essential for long-term back health.
