OVERVIEW
The St. Stephen’s Hospital
The St. Stephen’s Hospital Patients Welfare Society was formed nearly fifty years ago by a group of former patients of the hospital, deeply inspired by its outreach to the community – especially the most needy and destitute. They wanted to give back the gratitude they felt for the care and affection they had received, and so created a voluntary arm to raise funds for the needy and to strengthen the hospital’s medical capacity over time.
Because the hospital is a non-profit institution that receives no government funding, this work depends entirely on the compassion and generosity of donors, families, and friends of St. Stephen’s. Every contribution helps a real patient receive treatment they could not otherwise afford.

During the pandemic, Society members acted as front-line workers, coming to the hospital despite the risks. They donated masks, PPE, surgical gloves, goggles and sanitisers, along with ventilators, oxygen tankers, a high-flow nasal cannula machine, an OPG machine for the dental department, and an applanation tonometer for ophthalmology. The Society raised donations for a new 30-bed COVID unit, refurbished 120 beds for COVID patients, and helped set up a PSA oxygen plant within the hospital premises. A used mobile medical van, oxygen cylinders and compressors were also donated, and members worked tirelessly to ensure poor patients who approached them received full treatment.
Our ongoing projects
Since its inception, the Society has run multiple projects funded by volunteer effort, to serve the neediest patients who seek care at this non-profit facility.
The Polio Camp
Begun in 1987 under the renowned orthopaedic surgeon the late Dr. B. Sankaran. Children with paralysis from poliomyelitis are given reconstructive surgery so they can walk and lead normal lives. Over 30,000 children have been treated to date, travelling from across India; the entire treatment and stay is completely free, with an eight-bed ward dedicated to them.
Club Foot
Thousands of children with club foot treated, surgically or by tenotomy. A football team formed of successfully treated children plays exhibition matches regularly.
Eye Care
Free cataract and glaucoma surgery and optic-nerve correction for needy patients.
Tuberculosis
over 100 TB patients treated at any given time, completely free — diagnosis, tests, medicines and follow-up.
Thalassaemia
Support for needy thalassaemia-major children, who need transfusions every 15–20 days, with regular transfusions and costly investigations provided free.
Physiotherapy
Funds raised to set up a physiotherapy unit at the hospital’s satellite facility in Gurgaon and to refurbish the unit in Tis Hazari.
Artificial Limbs Clinic
Free artificial limbs and battery-operated arms for needy patients.
Dental care
Support for needy patients with mouth cancer and other ailments, including dentures.
Cardiac care
67 children with cardiac problems operated on free of cost; financial support for needy patients needing angiography and angioplasty.
Kidney transplants
Fully funded transplants for patients including a young boy, a young girl, and a 35-year-old man, with organs donated by family members.
Nand Nagari community centre
A community centre in the Nand Nagari resettlement area providing free medical care, diagnostic clinics, occupational training for women, scholarships for
Talented youth, education and self-defence classes, plus an old-age centre and child day-care providing daily midday meals to over 100 beneficiaries.
How you can help
None of this is possible without the continued support of donors, extended families, and friends of St. Stephen’s — those who provide both the funds and the pro bono work that make this work possible. You can help through your company, your family, or your foundation.
